Dear Cohesion Alliance Member,
I have the pleasure to share with you the 2024 edition of the "EU Annual Report on the State of Regions and Cities – A closer, stronger, cohesive and ambitious European Union", which the European Committee of the Regions released on 7 October 2024.
At the beginning of a new EU legislature 2024-29, the report provides unique insights on the topics that matter most in cities and regions. It highlights what our regions and cities need from Europe, and how they can contribute to address the key democratic and socio-economic challenges, which Europe will face in the coming years. Through concrete facts, figures and regional maps, the report illustrates key trends and practical solutions on the ground.
The report's main findings were also reflected in my annual speech on "the State of Regions and Cities in the European Union" – delivered on 7 October, and in a resolution adopted on 9 October 2024.
The resolution and report recommendations underline, once again, how important it is to involve local and regional authorities in the planning and implementation of European policies. European democracy can indeed count on more than a million elected representatives in town halls and regional parliaments, to further engage with citizens beyond European elections and deliver concrete results on the ground. The European Committee of the Regions, as the political assembly of local and regional representatives, have been their voice for 30 years and will continue to do so in the spirit of cooperation.
