1. Global and regional demand for health workers is expected to increase in the coming decades because of demographic and economic growth combined with epidemiological and additional emerging factors.
In this context, all European countries are facing similar challenges regarding the current and future health workforce. 
These challenges risk undermining the possibility of national and regional health systems to achieve universal health coverage.
OASES project organised its first EU-wide conference with the aim to describe medical desert phenomenon through the use of specific indicators. 
At the same time this has been the occasion to involve experts from other projects acting in the field of mitigating medical deserts in order to coordinate the actions under this call. (LINK) (...)

2. State of Health in the EU: Country Health Profiles 2021 and Companion Report (LINK)
The State of Health in the EU 2021 Companion Report and the 2021 Country Profiles were launched at a 13 December webinar, hosted in collaboration with the EU Health Policy Platform and attended by over 430 participants. 
As stated at the webinar, the Companion Report, which summarises the Country Profiles, draws three main key conclusions:

# COVID-19 impact is huge with complex impacts on health systems across the EU
# Digital innovations can provide efficient healthcare services
# There's an urgent need to better support the health workforce

The European Health Union, in response to these and other challenges outlined in the report, aims to build more resilient health systems, develop a more robust pandemic response and reduce inequalities in health.
The Country Health Profiles and the Companion Report are part of the State of Health in the EU cycle, a joint project of the European Commission, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (Observatory). 
The Country Health Profiles cover the latest developments in the health systems of all EU countries, as well as of Iceland and Norway. 
They reflect specific challenges that the countries encountered in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and provide an analysis of the effectiveness, accessibility and resilience of each country's health system. (...)
