EuroCommerce highlights importance of wholesale trade
At its first “wholesale day” in the European Parliament today (November 4th 2013), EuroCommerce has raised the profile of the wholesale sector.
The 1.8 million
wholesale companies in the EU provide jobs to over 10 million Europeans
and achieve a combined annual turnover of over €5 trillion.
“Wholesale is a
major job engine at the centre of Europe’s economy. Though not always
visible to the consumer, it delivers essential know-how and services,” said Carl Hugo Erbslöh, EuroCommerce Vice-President.
Between producers
and retailers, artisans and professionals lies a very important sector
of the economy: wholesalers are the engine of efficient supply chain
throughout the EU economy. Yet it is often invisible
to the end consumer. “Today, EuroCommerce taking the advantage of its 20th anniversary year, focuses on wholesale as a major engine of the European economy. We ask EU policy makers to develop a ’commerce reflex‘ by which they can assess the
impact of a legislative or policy measure on wholesale companies both on-line and in store,”
said Christian Verschueren, EuroCommerce Director-General.
At today’s (November 4th 2013)
High-Level European Wholesale Day, hosted by Robert Rochefort MEP,
EuroCommerce discussed b2b-related policies with key EU decision-makers
and launched a
new brochure on the wholesale sector.
